What's the Difference Between a Landing Page and a Website?

12 January 2026 · 5 min read

Many businesses use the words 'landing page' and 'website' interchangeably, as if they're the same thing. They're not. They have completely different purposes, different structures, and require different approaches. Understand the difference, and you can save a lot of money and get much better results from your digital work.

What is a website?

A website is a collection of pages representing your entire business. It typically includes a homepage, an about page, a services page, a contact page, maybe a blog, and various subpages. The purpose is broad: build brand, inform, showcase what you do, provide contact info, create trust, and ensure you exist for your customers in different phases.

A website should be able to answer many different questions from many different visitors. This means the structure is open, navigation is rich, and content covers broadly.

What is a landing page?

A landing page is one single page with one single purpose. It's built to convert — meaning get the visitor to do one specific thing. That could be downloading an e-book, signing up for a webinar, booking a meeting, buying a specific product, or requesting a quote.

The most important characteristic is that a landing page often has no regular navigation. You remove all distractions — menu, footer links, sidebar — and let the user focus on one thing. This typically gives five to ten times higher conversion than sending people to a regular website.

When do you use a landing page?

Landing pages are the right tool when you're running paid advertising — Google Ads, Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads. You're paying for every click, and you want every click to do one specific thing. Then it's wasteful to send them to your homepage where they can click around and get lost.

They're also useful for campaigns, launches, seasonal offers, or when you're testing new markets or target groups.

When do you use a regular website?

A regular business website is the foundation. It's what people find when they Google your business, it's what you send the link to when someone asks what you do, and it's what builds your long-term brand. Every business needs a good website — and some businesses additionally need landing pages for specific campaigns or ads.
